I've always assumed that "Corky" would have been very much responsible for his portrayal in press-releases as a type of loveable
rogue in the style of Arthur Daley ("The Minder" was very popular at the time!). There's certainly a lot of positive comments
about him from the Bureau members in the Record Mirror interview which can be found on the "Any other Business" page of the
site. |

Actually, the album 'Only For Sheep...' was also released in New Zealand. It has the same catalogue number as the Australian
one (600104). I bought it when it came out in 1981, and I think I've only seen one other copy. So, not a huge hit in NZ! I
was a big Dexys fan, and would listen to anything remotely like it. I thought The Bureau were fantastic, and it's one of my
favourites albums still. I was listening to it tonight, which is why I ended up here! Thanks for the posting this information
about them. I can remember some of it from an article in NME or Melody Maker at the time, especially the stuff about running
out of money in the USA, and the bust up with Kevin Rowland. It was a real shame they never had a chance to be a success.
I also can't believe the album wasn't released in the UK in 1981. They deserved much better. Cheers, Iain. |

In Dublin 82/83 I saw The Bureau play in the Sportsmans Inn, and played support to them in Woodlands Hotel,
Bray. Both of these venues are gone but I've ne er forgotten The Bureau. I had never seen such passion or playing, then or
since. I was in an outfit called Some Kind of Wonderful playing alto sax and percussion, struggling like most other bands
and wondering where it was all going. The Bureau played music I was into, great strut and killer brass and its a shame they
never made it -those guys could play! A lot of people would still remember them in Ireland.

You know, it's funny how seamlessly we carved up the work-load when we first set up the "Dexys Midnight Runners Group" on
msn.com... myself and Eddie (AKA: Eddie Metal) just instinctively seemed to gravitate towards the pages we each wanted to
create and there were very few occasions on which we both had a desperate desire to take charge of a specific section of the
site. For instance, I always knew I would be putting The Blue Ox Babes pages together and there was never any doubt that Eddie,
who had helped to reunite members of The Bureau just a few months earlier (in March 2003) would handle their feature. Because
of that I sometimes forget quite how much I actually love The Bureau. For far too long the Blue Ox Babes pages enjoyed a nice
new home on this site while those featuring The Bureau - and other bands - languished on the old (and rather inadequate) web-group
pages at multiply.com. Although I was disappointed by the disappearance of that site, I am at least glad that it has forced
my hand in recreating Eddie's great Bureau piece (which, thankfully, I'd had the foresight to save) on this web-site. |
