Have you seen the film? Where? I saw this film in my Substance Abuse Class
Have you purchased the film? Where?
Have you ever seen SPERLING speak? Where? No,
Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I am doing a paper about this documentary for my class. I found it hard to watch at times but I could also relate. I found it very heartfelt and just to see the disease of a addiction process in someone else life helped me get a better prospective on the addiction process. I just wonder why the social services couldn't help him with his mental health issues so that they could address his addiction. I use to work at a treatment facility in Orange County and I know that there are many places he could of gone, but in the end of it all, Mark was comfortable living in his "bottom" So sad.

Have you seen the film? Where? CAARR Conference, 2012 or so
Have you purchased the film? Where? I ordered it during my first viewing, and have since bought the updated version.
Have you ever seen SPERLING speak? Where? No, not yet.
Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I greatly appreciate the film and everyone who made it possible. I first used it in outpatient treatment, and currently use it in jail where I counsel inmates. It has never failed to take my client's on an emotional journey. Best wishes to DJS, and RIP MDA.

Have you seen the film? Where? Yes... I have shown it to several DUI Courses and in AOD Treatment groups
Have you purchased the film? Where? My old company purchased it years ago
Have you ever seen SPERLING speak? Where? No - However, I do plan on making it happen very soon.
Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I would like to say that this film is a perfect depiction of how addiction can overtake a person's existence. I appreciate the efforts of this officer and wished to have had the opportunity to meet Mark Allen. Although his addiction took over his life, everyone's life has meaning and purpose. Thank you for ensuring the tragedy he called his life was not in vain. Mark Allen will forever help those suffering from similar circumstances (whether it was in the beginning, end, or somewhere in the middle of his life).

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... The movie was the male version of my life until I walked into AA at 38 y/o. I celebrate 25 yr clean and sober May 17th 2016 and turn 60 y/o September 11th. Thank GOD I didn't go through 1/2 of what he did. It could have been that easy to do if I hadn't placed value on my life. It wasn't easy! If I can do it you can too. Just don't pick up no matter what. Sharon A.

Have you ever seen SPERLING speak? Where? No
Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I just finished watching the documentary. I love Mark. Despite everything he went through in his life I could still see his kind heart. He was a survivor of a relentless disease. Treated like trash by so many he was still able to sing songs and say kind things to David Sperling. Somewhere in his insanity he was aware of his insanity. I love him eventhough I didnt know him. I think he just wanted to be left alone eventhough in most peoples eyes he needed to change or be helped. He may not have lived up to societys standards of a "normal" human being but he was still a human being. What a great documentary. Bravo David Sperling.

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... After convincing the clinical director this was a film that was absolutely necessary to show to clients, it has become a monthly showing in Addiction Education. The biggest question most viewers ask is, 'Is he still alive?' I too would like to know, if possible. Thank you so much for putting this documentary together, it WILL save someone's life!

Very heart wrenching as a therapist and someone who truly wants everyone I work with to be successful. Thank you for this story- My sincerely sympathy on the loss of Mr. Allen.

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... Bravo on the Documentary Mr. Sperling. I have the original and I just watched it again for the "manyth" time. I have been blessedly recovering for 13 years and your documentary is a reminder that we recovering alcoholics are just one drink away. We are not just alcoholics we are people who live and breath and have lives and histories and we love and we need to be loved. Your film is the best real truth ever told, God bless you! I am sad that Mr. Allen passed but so glad that he had a friendly connection he could count on with you.

Have you ever seen SPERLING speak? Where? no
Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... There but for the grace of God go I. I've been clean now over 13 yrs. At any moment I could have continued on like Mark. I drank and used drugs to blackout, the bottle Of Kamchatka was me. Luckily I was incarcerated long enough the last time (of several) that I was able to get the spark of recovery and stayed clean thru NA and God since. Great Job, David, important, real, and brought tears to my eyes, I can only say he must have been in a lot of pain, and maybe the system did fail him. But nonetheless the choice is always ours whether we chose to get sober/clean or not. Thank you for doing this.

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... David, you documented my life also. I weeped watching the movie. I served in the Army from 80 til' the end of 82 in Erlangen, Germany. There began my drinking problem, as I remained in Germany working for the U.S. Government until eventually the cold war ended. The drinking got worse. I'd like to one day (when time permits) send you my story on CD. I returned to the states in 2006. The 26 years I spent in Deutschland though, were the most wonderful years of my drinking life. May God always be with you David. I'm the guy that gave you a hug after watching "Drunk in Public" on Saturday. I had to leave, it was just too sad to stick around and here the answers you were giving to the people's questions. Again, that movie was basically based on my life. Gary. gdelome@live.com

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I thought the film was extraordinary. I am a non-practicing alcoholic attending AA and NA meetings whenever I can. I grew up around alcoholics and drug addicts. I only have a few months clean, but that in itself, is a miracle. The documentary served to tighten my grip on my sobriety and serve my Lord justly and always. Mr. Mark David Allen is blessed physically, having survived so much trama to his body both on the outside and, especially, the inside. It is very unfortunate that his mental state has deteriorated to what it is now. In spite of his maladies, Mr. Allen is a remarkable man. May God bless this unfortunate soul.

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... Oh my gosh. Words can not express the impact that Mr. Sperling's movie and Mark David Allen had on our class. I was absolutely in tears, as were other classmates. (I believe even a few of the guys shed some tears). Mark has fallen through every crack there is to fall through - how, as a society, can we allow this to happen? My heart breaks for Mark and his family and I am so grateful to have seen Mr. Sperling's movie. I am also grateful to have found wellbriety and the road to recovery! Thank you Mr. Sperling for caring about Mark and for this incredible movie! I am now going to purchase the movie and share it with others. Blessings!

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I am lost for words, as a recovering alcoholic of almost 25 years. I know so many like Mark, but his story really made a footprint. I will continue to help, educate and always give hope to the alcoholic that still suffers-we never know who will live and who will die. It is not our journey, but it is our journey to never give up on HOPE! Bless his soul. Thank you Officer Spurling - you are a gift to our world. Marcia Yager isobercoach@gmail.com

Have you seen the film? Where? Yes - on DVD
Have you purchased the film? Where? No - though I would like to
Have you ever seen SPERLING speak? Where? No
Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... Heard about this DVD on the Immortal Alcoholic's Blogger's private group page on Facebook. The group is called OARS and is for the family and friends of end stage alcoholics. My son is an alcoholic. He is 31. I have seen much of this behavior before with my son. It is unbelievable (but I do believe it because I have experienced this kind of ineptness before)that the government agencies did not find Mr. Allen disabled. This proves that the 'system' needs to be changed. I truly think you, Mr.Sperling and the officers who have come in contact with Mr Allen are his guardian angels. Once while in rehab my son told me his group watched The Whale Rider - why I have no idea but then he could just be telling me a lie. If only he had seen this video instead. Agencies are suppose to help people but they believe anything that the alcoholic tells them which this video proves. I had to laugh because my son gave a line to his counselor that 'he drank only when he bowled with his team on Wednesdays' - he hadn't bowled since he was a little kid and he drank every chance he got. But they gave him a certificate of achievement for putting in his time at the rehab (that the court had ordered) and he celebrated by getting high that night. Thank you Mr.Sperling for making this film. It took me awhile before I could bring myself to watch it but I finally did. I'd like to invite you to visit The Immortal Alcoholic's Blog if you have the time. Our group OARS - which stands Our Alcoholic Resource and Support for Families and Friends has a link there - we are trying to raise money to become a non profit and start groups across the country. Alcoholism is an ugly and fatal disease. Thank you for your compassion.

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... This video was the best video I have shown in any of my groups. I work in an addictions recovery center and we had a group on chemical dependency that we used this movie for. All of our clients were just astonished. It held their attention the whole way. Most of them did not realize the impact that alcoholism has on your body and mind. If even one of our clients think about this movie when they are about to pick up a drink, then it was well worth viewing is the way I feel. Personally in our group I think every client would think about this movie and not pick up that drink. I would like to have more movies like this to use for groups. Awesome Film. Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I saw this film during one of my many stints in rehab. This man's story provoked many different emotions in me. Sometimes I laughed (although not at his expense, some of the things he came up with were simply funny), sometimes I cried because of this poor soul's plight. Since my release, I have followed Mr. Sperling's updates on Mark's travels and (mis)adventures. I was deeply saddened at the news of his passing. I pray that Mr. Allen has found in the next life what he could not find in the bottom of a bottle. Mr. Sperling, thank you so much for sharing Mark's story with the world. If even a single person is inspired to enter recovery and get well because of your work, then Mark's life and death were not in vain. Thanks and God bless. Steve

Tears immediately came to my eyes as I was very impacted by the film, Mark's struggle with his disease and the humanity that came through the film. Mark is finally free now. Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I bought the video when I was in my internship here at the VA Hospital completing the requirements for my Masters Degree in Substance Abuse Counseling. I was lucky enough to get hired here as an Addiction Therapist and I currently run the Wednesday night Aftercare group, the Thursday night Intensive Outpatient Group and the Saturday Tracks 1 and 2 programs located in our Mental Health Facility. When I purchased the video back in early 2011 you emailed me and told me that Mr. Allen had been incarcerated 508 times as of Christmas Day 2010. I have rewritten our training matrixs for my groups and your video is included as one of my trainings focusing on Stereotyping and Consequences of addiction. I am normally not a big fan of many recovery videos. I think they are usually boring. I enjoy your video because it is thought provoking. When my veterans are discharged from care after completion of one of our programs often your video is the one thing they remember most. I love that and I think there is no higher compliment that can be paid to you as a film maker than telling you that my veterans, many of whom are recovering addicts and alcoholics remember what they saw. One of my vets looked up your website tonight while we were in group and told me Mr. Allen had passed away. I was sad to hear it. I too am a recovering addict and have been clean and sober for over 6 years. Thank you again for this video. It has become a very important part of the message I try to get across to my veterans. Have you seen the film? Where? Yes DVD
Have you purchased the film? Where? No but it is being used in our treatment facility
Have you ever seen SPERLING speak? Where? no
Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I am a nurse working in drug and alcohol addiction and the film was very alarming to me, as to how the health and human services system failed time and time again to help. That is amazing and very sad, and should make someone take more notice of these kinds of situations, instead of seeing these guys as just another drunk or idiot or nuisience. I have had many patients tell me it just takes one person to show they care, to change their lives. I also work with many homeless, and have to come to terms we really cannot help those who really truly do not want to change, sooner or later they go back out, the film shows how devasting alcohol is in our society, just so so so much in that film, it was fantastic and I really hope it will help our patients in treatment, if it could even save one life and help one person that would be a true gift. Thanks, Lynda

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I work in a VA treatment center and bought this DvD. I find it as real as it gets. I believe that every alcoholic that ever watches this will find a little piece of themselves some where in the documentary. Mr. Sperling, I would love to here you speak some time. You did a wonderful job. You treated Mark with compassion, and showed him respect. I applaud you for that.

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... Im a recovering alcohlic , I went to speak to the patients as I do every monday - they told me about this movie they had just watched "Drunk in Public" and the impact it had on them . I went home and read all 5 chapters , I couldnt pull myself away . I then ordered the movie to share (wish I would have gotten three for the good price , but hit paypal to quick before I saw the prices..lol)It saddens me he has passed , but what you have done with this film Mark will continue to help people . You and Mark have already helped me wanting to help the new comer even more . To give freely to others which has been given so freely to me . Gotta give it away in order to keep it RIGHT ! The reading to me was by far more amazing . I can only be there in pray tomorrow , I will share with my home group tonight and since I have the best home group ever they too will be there in thoughts and prayer . God Bless Mark David Allen and Mr Sperling for the awsome and caring work u do .

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... Ive been in the Army Substance Program because of Alcohol for a litte over 4 months now and really hadn't cared for anything they were trying to throw at me. This video really got to me though. It's very sad to see how alcohol can take over and change peoples lives like this. I'm sorry to hear that he passed but its good to know hes at peace now. I live near new port beach and i was hoping to maybe run into him when i came home in 4 months. I want to thank you for your dedication and loving kindness that you showed to this man.

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... I haven't seen the film but I when I saw Mark Allen's face in the Daily Pilot I knew this is the man I gave $5.00 to 6-7 years ago after seeing him rummage thru garbage cans for food. I will never forget his face I told him to please get himself a hamburger; he was filthy, but he had a gentle face and he said "bless you"-I have thought about him for years as I never saw him again-I live in Newport beach on the pennisula I would like to see the film.

Have you ever seen SPERLING speak? Where? no
Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... David, Thanks for all you have done in your dedication to following Mark all these years so that many could see his story. I just finished my second offender program and I did see alot of your films in the class. It really touched me because you never gave up. It is hard to believe he lasted as long as he did. He is in a better place and no longer suffering but it is still hard to face the fact he is gone. I hope you will continue to stay on this path and get your films of Mark out there. They can help many people. Not just dui offenders, but people who deal and suffer from alcoholism. Thanks for all you have done. Mark's legacy will no doubt live on. All The Best David, Jennifer

Please leave your thoughts, feelings, comments... As a recovering Alcoholic I relate so much to MDA's story. Not on a physical level but on a feelings level. They say in AA, no matter how far down the scale you have gone, you will see how your experience can benifit ohers. I'd say that says it all. He has saved many lives I am certain of that!
